Major Construction Done, Now Time For Tweaking Perfection

I know we have been quiet for quite some time but we did have a huge wedding complete with a 120-person barbecue at our house to show off our renovations. And now it's time to get back to work, now not in let's-get-this-house-livable-mode but instead, let's start to tweak perfection.

First up?

Under the Staircase
Before: How the nook looked in Joan-Days

An ugly return (for our HVAC system), a leftover bench for impromptu (but rare) seating, and a cabinet that only holds batteries just isn't cutting it for this lovely little nook. What we do lack on the first floor is a proper coat closet, somewhere we can hang guests jackets and hide our vacuum.

The Ideas
I scoured design blogs and Houzz to find what others have done with this often under utilized space and found a variety ideas ranging from wine storage to bedrooms to offices to general storage.

What we can cross off the list...

Bedrooms
No need! We have 6 already so another bedroom is certainly not high on our priority list.
All the utilities make this bedroom look horrible, but umm, interesting?
Wine Storage
While some friends and family may argue that this surely must be high on our priority list, they are correct but not for this location. When we eventually build a wine storage area suited for our wine-loving needs, it will land in the basement and will leverage our old coal stove encasement.
Wine Storage Mecca, too modern
More wine storage ideas
Other Rooms
Like a bedroom, we do not need any more kitchen, desk or library space but I included all of these because I was impressed with the creativity and utilization of this space.

General Storage & Coat Room
A place to hang guest's coats, a place to hide our vacuum  a place to stash our growing tablecloth and linen collection, now that is the place we need!
Love the look of these drawers!

Like space allocation but don't like how it looks different than stairs

good use of shelving

LOVE how no space is unused with pull-out method

General Look & Feel
So now that we know how we'll use the space, one small section for the return vent, one section for pull out drawer and two sections for coat/storage closet, we just have to decide on how it will look. What do you think? Painted white, light oak wood like our floors or darker stained wood?

Option A - Painted White

Option B - Light Oak Wood (same as our floors)

Option C - Darker Stained Wood (same as our vestibule)

We Made the DIY Website

Remember when I told you during the filming of our attic renovation we had to pretend to fight over our style preferences? Sure enough, that's the main plot line - read more in the blurb from the network about our episode:

*** WE HAVE A DATE!! ****

First off, thanks to our friends/family/followers for your patience. Second, get your DVRs ready, our premier episode of Good, Better, Best (also known as DGBB-101), premiers Wednesday, March 14th at 10pm on DIY-network.

For those without the channel (myself included since I don't think any hotels have), don't fear, we'll eventually get a DVD and I'll find a way to post online so stay tuned. According to the executive producer, you'll also start to see promotions about two weeks out. This includes commercials, details of the show online and more (www.diynetwork.com and www.tvguide.com).

Apparently the time slot is good but not great. It's considered prime time BUT with that comes some serious competition (Top Chef, Californaition, Resturaunt Impossible, CSI, etc).

Why It Helps To Have Creative Friends

I appreciate everyone weighing in on the new room and truthfully, none of this house's design has come without crucial feedback from friends and family. While I am still not 100% on the exact bed or any other furniture to purchase just yet, Martiena sent me a fabulous photo/inspiration the other day and I think I'm sold.

Proposed room layout:

So based off the angled bed within my layout, her idea was to have a headboard with wings so you feel enclosed even though you are away from walls. LOVE IT. This is why I need you all to keep feeding me your brilliance so I can eat it up and take all the credit for the final masterpieces (kidding of course).

So here's some great winged bed ideas....

You Decide - Junior Suite Decor

Now that the majority of our renovations are complete (at least until after the wedding), it's time to start decorating. This is my favorite part of the process because I get to turn Gregg's hard work of making our house livable from an infrastructure standpoint and transform it into a cozy home.

Junior Suite Furniture- What We Already Have
Window Coverings: Roman Shades in This Fabric
Matte Black Long Dresser
Matte Black Daybed
Dark Wood Towel Cabinet
Junior Suite - Pulling together the Design
The first room to tackle is the junior suite. Remember when you helped decide the grey walls (here)? Well now it's on to helping me decide which color furniture to place. I gave Gregg three options for the primary furniture like the bed:
  1.  natural darker wood
  2. white / ivory / antique white / cream
  3. black / espresso
He eliminated option #1 but we can't decide between two and three. HELP!!!

White-ish
The beauty of white is it screams class and has a a more effeminate touch which matches this refined space. In contrast to other rooms that have wood-heavy details, this room is void of those touches. The bathroom is already designed with the same palette of white tiles and darker grey walls.
A Peak Into the Bathroom
I also like the option of playing with re purposing some french provincial nightstands and painting them yellow and them combining it all with some of our existing black pieces.
White on lite grey (similar to our walls)
White + Darker wood accent
An example of white bed + black accent furniture
A French Provincial take on white

Black-ish
Black has the benefit of more closely matching the existing pieces as well as providing a more masculine take on the space.
LOVE idea of black-lacquering an antique bed

Yellow Nightstands anyone?
A neutral base for any color scheme

So what do you think? Dark or light bed? Voice your opinion and then check back to see how it turns out.

Making Martha (Stewart) Proud

My Living Room
So it may seem conceited to compare your design senses to that of Martha Stewart, but hey, my living room is hot! By setting it up with some furniture we already have, I created a fun reading/relaxing room that is pure class. I even found a place to highlight my five holiday decorations. Enjoy!

What's Left?
A rug, a side table or two, placing our framed 1920s house photo above the mantel, and a clear coat on the mantel.
