Obsessed with Tile

My entire kitchen color scheme will be be based off my latest ebay find from Art Nouvea Tiles. Four of these antique Art Nouveau Majolica tiles, flanked by simple white 3"x6" subway tiles, will become an accent diamond (hopefully the focal point of the kitchen) above the stove and below the hood. And yes, I'm obsessed with them! They were well-worth the expensive shipping from Uruguay.

  • Technique: Manufacture Dust pressed clay tile using a mold & horsehead press- then burned-  Decoration Relief molded majolica. Decorated with colored glazes.
  • Factory: Richards, England
  • Approximate Date: ca 1900
  • Condition: This tile is in extremely fine condition, no flaws or repairs exist. Cement on reverse was carefully removed. Surface glazing is perfect with smooth surface and balanced crazing that is usual for majolica. This tile is remarkable for its glazing quality. Color is firm and tile is well painted. Only minimal scratches and imperceptible tiny chips may be seen only but at close inspection, but this is nothing for a more than 100 year old architectural piece.

I even think I like the seafoam green enough to inspire the dining room to have the darker shade below the chair rail and lighter shade above (chair rail is cream). But let's finish the kitchen first...

  1. If it wasn't for 1900s, I'd go ahead and say that this tile is very "green": sounds like they are using scrapes to make it (manufacturing dust?) :)

  2. Hahaha. Ya not so sure what they mean by manufacturing dust either but I'm thinking it's just lost in translation since they're located in Uruguay.
