As you all have followed us over the past month, we have bravely entered the new world of reality television. As this Saturday wraps up our final shoot day, here is a summary of the fun so far. By the way, for any of you in the area, stop by Saturday night for the wrap party!!
The Show
Since we are filming the pilot (aka the first episode of a brand new series), everything from the premise of the show to the format and even name have changed throughout the casting and production process. If you remember my post back here on us getting cast to shoot it, the name at that point was "winning the bid" but has since changed to "Good Better Best."
We still don't know the exact details of when this will air, how much of our crazy scenes will make the final cut (keep in mind 70+ hours of film get cut down to 21 minutes) but we do know it will air in the Fall on DIY Network so stay tuned to find out more.
The Talent
So you may be wondering how these renovation shows find their hosts? The host of our show, and like most other shows in this category, is a general contractor by trade but steps into the role of television host with ease. While I can't speak to other hosts like the famous Ty Pennington, our host Jeff Devlin's start came from being in the right place at the right time (or as he states with sarcasm: wrong place, wrong time). The head of sound, Patty, was dropping off some equipment to Jeff's house since he was using it for his band or some other personal use. After meeting the extremely energetic/bubbly Jeff she spotted a perfect fit for the production company's needs and the rest is history.
How Much Does This Actually Cost Us?
The most common question I have received is how much has our attic renovation, which is all part of the show, actually cost us? Some people guess that it's all for free, some people think we get paid to be on television and others figure we have to cover the entire bill. In reality, it's a combination of all of the above. They do 'pay' us for being on a television show by contributing a big chunk of change towards the renovation costs. In addition, reality television shows like ours survive greatly on the premise of trades. A trade consists of a product that is shown on television for the sake of getting the product free from the manufacturer. From trades we have received lighting, wood flooring, furniture, a mattress, skylights, etc. We have also received a few things at a great discount like our granite and travertine from Let's Get Stoned. The rest of the material and labor costs we absorb.
