An Interior Design Contemplation: The Breakfast Room

Between the kitchen, the crazy powder room/basement entrance and then green room we have our "breakfast room."

So what are we starting with?

The original (before we touched anything)

The Good Stuff

  • A gorgeous <pat on the back> breakfast bar and pass through window into the kitchen.
  • A washer, dryer and work sink hidden behind some nice new closet doors.
  • A coal burning stove, original to house, dating back to 1890s.
  • Servant bells station showing exactly which room rang. We never know when this will come in handy :)
  • An original intercom system - can clearly have conversation with someone in the great room by speaking into tube.
The "Can't get rid of it quick enough" Stuff
  • A built-in cabinet (similar to the kitchen one) that will be passed to our neighbors so they can lovingly restore it as doing one is more than enough work for us! Plus the cat's have left too much of their signature on it.
  • Pinkish/purplish tiles
  • A vomit-worthy cat pee stench.
  • A strange half height exposed brick wall which surrounds the stove.
  • Rotted window sills (again a reference to the lovely cat damage).

So what's next?
These are the ideas I'm toying with...

I love the bold colors and patterns mixed with traditional furniture in this design.
In these next few designs I like the idea of a built in bench seating against the windows.

Perhaps keep the brick and just use a muted form to keep the colors pleasant and bright? Also, note the great way to utilize formal seating (couch and upholstered chairs) around a table to create a comfy/traditional feeling dining area.

This next design captures a great feeling of eclectic objects mixed with warm colors and comfy fabrics. I also like idea of utilizing a hutch or sideboard in the furniture layout. Probably too French country for our house but I still love it none-the-less.
If I don't do built in seating, then I like this centered layout (where our washer/dryer would be behind in closets very similar).

Some other ideas that inspiring me but not sure which elements I can capture in my own room.
