Because One Project Is Never Enough, Continued

Continued from this previous post...

Project #3 - The 3rd Floor Junior Suite
While there hasn't been any dead chickens lately (didn't hear about that one? click here to read more), there is still tons of work to do managing this massive renovation.

What went on this week and last:
  • Framing side wall, ceiling, new opening, old door way
  • Install bathroom vent (through exterior brick wall)
  • Add insulation between bathroom and exterior wall
  • Electrical rough-in
  • Plumbing rough-in
  • Drywall (by end of week)

Little Chris removing mess pre-framing
Measuring for the plumbing
New toilet drain
Going through next door bathroom to replace drain pipe.

Note toilet moved to the right (aka no toilet on 3rd floor where we sleep)
Adding Larger Panel on 2nd Floor

2nd Floor Bathroom Opened to Access Drain
Project #4 - Tree Removal
So at this point I'm sure you're over our massive list of projects (it even makes me tired re-living the past frenzied weeks) but there is one project I have yet to mention... removing our holly tree! Before you call us tree-haters, anti-environmentalists please be aware, it wasn't US attacking the tree but instead the TREE ATTACKED US! Let me explain...
- 120 years ago, the nice people who built our house placed a pretty little holly tree beside it. Cute.
- 120 years later, the cute little holy tree grew into a massive tree with massive roots that pushed and pushed until it went right through our exterior wall into our basement causing major gaps, leaks, access into our basement. Now imagine a day with rain and how much fun it is to walk down to a flooded basement. Now can you see why the cute little tree had to go?

Here's how they managed this feat within only a few hours!
Starting from the bottom, they cut off the limbs and worked their way up
Close-up of the action
SAFETY FIRST! hence a hard hat
Working his way up...
Not looking as safe in this shot...
Almost to the top!
Where nice branches go to die... ground up into sawdust
What goes up (tree cutting dude), must come down

and down...
and down...
and down...to a stump.
At this point they dug up around the stump and were able to remove it entirely. They then back filled the holes in the basement and walla!

For all of you still upset by our loss - don't fear! We are planning on planting a new gorgeous tree BUT this time far, far, far away from our foundation at the street level. Have any suggestions for a new tree that will grow quickly in east coast weather, provide lots of shade, and doesn't grow into a monstrous root system that will eat up our sidewalk?

  1. Nope, anything that grows quickly will bust up your sidewalk. Anything that grows shallow will break the walk, anything that grows deep will ruin your foundation/basement.

  2. What if it grows deep but we plant far away from house close to the street? I would hate to lose the neighborhood feel of shady walks.
